A three-day state-level waste collection and segregation drive is being carried out with the objective of achieving “zero waste to landfill” by preventing waste from reaching dumping yards and promoting its conversion into usable resources. The initiative is being organised as a public festival to encourage citizens to move away from indiscriminate dumping and adopt responsible waste disposal practices.
The drive, which began earlier this week, will continue until January 23. Authorities said the campaign focuses on segregation at source to ensure that different categories of waste can be processed efficiently.
Segregated Waste Collected Across All Wards on First Day
On the first day of the drive, unused and discarded materials were collected after being segregated at the source across wards. Officials said the total quantity of waste collected will be weighed the following day to assess the scale and effectiveness of the initiative.
Items collected during the drive included old paper, plastic waste, broken wooden articles, damaged electronic equipment, unusable glass items, and cardboard boxes. The segregated waste has been sent for conversion into reusable resources or routed through designated disposal mechanisms.
Health Inspectors Deployed to Monitor Citywide Operations
To ensure proper implementation, Health Inspectors have been appointed to supervise and monitor the segregation and collection process. The drive is being conducted simultaneously in all 200 wards under the Greater Chennai Corporation limits.
Officials said close monitoring is aimed at maintaining uniform standards across wards and ensuring that the objective of reducing landfill dependency is met through systematic waste handling and public participation.
