A remarkable environmental transformation in northern Turkey has captured global attention after decades of patient reforestation turned barren hills into dense forests. The effort was led by Turkish forester Hikmet Kaya, who helped plant nearly 30 million trees across thousands of acres in the Boyabat region.
The project took place in the district of Boyabat in northern Turkey. What was once a degraded landscape marked by severe soil erosion and environmental damage has gradually transformed into a thriving forest ecosystem after decades of sustained restoration work.
Kaya began his forestry career in the late 1970s when the Boyabat region was struggling with heavy deforestation. Large areas of hillside had lost vegetation after years of environmental degradation, leaving communities vulnerable to flooding and soil erosion.
As a forestry operations chief, Kaya took responsibility for restoring large areas of state-owned land. Instead of short-term planting campaigns, he developed a long-term reforestation strategy focused on gradual and consistent progress.
Over nearly two decades, forestry teams planted millions of saplings across the degraded slopes. Hardy tree species, particularly pine varieties adapted to local climate conditions, were carefully selected to improve survival rates and stabilize the soil.
Community support helps restore thousands of hectares
Local communities played a crucial role in the reforestation program. Villagers helped plant young saplings, protect them from damage, and maintain the new forests during the critical early years of growth.
Through continuous planting and protection, the project successfully restored around 10,000 hectares roughly 25,000 acres of previously barren land. As the forest matured, the landscape began to change dramatically.
Tree roots strengthened the soil, reducing erosion and helping the land retain moisture. Wildlife gradually returned to areas that had once been stripped of vegetation, while the growing forest also began absorbing significant amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Viral photo highlights dramatic environmental transformation
Public attention toward the project grew after a photograph circulated online showing Kaya holding an old image of the hills before reforestation began. The earlier photo revealed dry, rocky slopes, while the present-day background displayed dense green forests covering the same terrain.
Now retired, Kaya says the forest stands as the greatest achievement of his career. According to him, the success of the project demonstrates how patience, persistence, and community cooperation can restore damaged ecosystems.
Environmental experts note that large-scale reforestation projects like this can play an important role in combating land degradation, restoring biodiversity, and helping mitigate climate change.
