India Swelters Under Intense Heatwave as Temperatures Cross 49°C

A brutal heatwave is gripping large parts of northwest and central India, pushing temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius in at least 22 locations and leaving millions struggling with extreme weather conditions. The searing heat is not only making daily life difficult but is also straining power grids as demand for cooling and water surges across states like Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this intense spell of heat will likely continue for another two days before light to moderate rainfall offers some relief starting June 15. The full arrival of the southwest monsoon, expected by June 25, is hoped to break this cycle of extreme temperatures and restore some climate stability to the affected regions.

Rajasthan’s Ganganagar district recorded a scorching 49.4 degrees Celsius, among the highest in the country. Other parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh also reported dangerously high temperatures, leaving local populations exposed to heat stress, dehydration, and potential health risks.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued fresh advisories urging caution, especially for vulnerable groups like daily wage earners, outdoor laborers, and the elderly, who are at higher risk of heatstroke and related illnesses. Protective measures and hydration guidelines have been circulated to help reduce the impact of the extreme heat.

As temperatures remain above normal across several regions, government agencies are on high alert to ensure the continuous supply of electricity and drinking water critical lifelines during such harsh weather events.

Weather experts continue to emphasize the urgent need for heatwave preparedness plans, especially as such extreme events are likely to become more frequent and severe due to climate change.
