IAEA Lise Meitner Programme Breaks Barriers for Women in Nuclear During Transformative Japan Visit

The International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Lise Meitner Programme (LMP) has achieved a major milestone with a two-week educational and leadership-focused visit to Japan, empowering 15 early- to mid-career women professionals from 13 countries to step into leadership roles in the nuclear sector. Held from June 9 to 20, 2025, the visit marks a crucial step in narrowing the gender gap in nuclear science and technology.

Hands-On Learning in a Global Nuclear Powerhouse

Hosted jointly by the University of Tokyo, the Japan Atomic Energy Commission, and the Cabinet Office of Japan with support from the IAEA Peaceful Uses Initiative the programme immersed participants in advanced nuclear engineering topics, from fuel design to radiation protection. Beyond technical knowledge, participants gained valuable insight into strategic planning, leadership, and career development.

The programme also included site visits to leading nuclear facilities, including the Hamaoka nuclear power plant, the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor, and Hitachi-GE’s Rinkai factory, where reactor components are manufactured.

Group exercises included analysis of the Fukushima nuclear accident and discussions on emergency response strategies, deepening the participants’ understanding of risk management and resilience.

Building Networks for the Future

Participants also connected with members of Women in Nuclear (WiN) Japan and explored the culture of Shizuoka, strengthening global ties and exchanging perspectives on gender inclusion in science.

Despite strides in the field, women remain underrepresented in nuclear sciences. Launched in 2023 by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, the LMP named after Lise Meitner, the co-discoverer of nuclear fission is designed to equip women with the tools, networks, and confidence needed to lead in traditionally male-dominated sectors.

Next Steps: Canada Edition in July

The next phase of the programme will take place in Canada from July 13–25, hosted by McMaster University and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, and will focus on research reactors. Like the Japan visit, it will combine technical learning with leadership development.

For more information on how to support or participate in the Lise Meitner Programme, visit the IAEA’s official website.

As the nuclear industry seeks diversity and resilience, initiatives like the LMP are paving the way for a more equitable and empowered future one global connection at a time.
