India Commissions First Megawatt-Scale Green Hydrogen Plant at Kandla, Boosting Clean Energy Goals

In a landmark moment for India green energy ambitions, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla has commissioned the country first indigenously built 1 Megawatt green hydrogen plant, marking a pivotal step toward maritime decarbonization and national net-zero goals.

Unveiled on July 31 in the presence of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and senior government officials, the plant represents the first ‘Make in India’ project of its kind at a port. The project was completed in a swift four-month timeline and is part of a broader 10 MW vision for green hydrogen generation.

Capable of producing approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually, the facility positions DPA as a national leader in clean port infrastructure and supports India’s larger goals under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

“This is a proud moment for India. The successful commissioning of this project not only reflects our engineering capabilities but also sets the foundation for a cleaner, more sustainable maritime sector,” said Sonowal, while congratulating the DPA and L&T engineers involved in the execution.

The Kandla plant showcases a self-reliant hydrogen ecosystem designed and built entirely by Indian firms, aligning with the Aatma-Nirbhar Bharat mission. As global demand for clean fuels grows, the project symbolizes India intent to lead in the production and use of green hydrogen, particularly in the logistics and shipping sectors.

With this facility India takes a significant leap in integrating renewable energy with industrial decarbonization, and offers a working model for replication across major ports in the country.
