SA Sets 2035 Climate Goal Strengthens Energy Partnership with Nigeria

South Africa has announced a new plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions, aiming to limit them to between 320 and 380 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent by 2035. This move is part of the country’s commitment to fight climate change while still protecting jobs and boosting the economy.

The announcement came from Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni during a post-Cabinet briefing on Thursday. She said the government is focused on a “just energy transition”—shifting to clean energy in a way that safeguards workers and vulnerable communities.

The target was set after detailed studies on future emissions, renewable energy plans, energy efficiency goals, and South Africa legal obligations under the Paris Agreement. Officials say it shows the country is serious about joining global efforts to slow global warming.

At the same time, South Africa is strengthening energy ties with Nigeria. Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe recently visited Nigeria to boost cooperation in mining, oil, and gas. Nigeria wants to grow its mining industry and tap into South Africa expertise, while South Africa hopes to secure a direct supply of crude oil and LPG from Nigeria reducing costs and ensuring a steady energy supply.

Nigeria has promised to finalize the oil deal by the end of August 2025. The agreement will allow South African refineries to buy directly, without relying on middlemen.

These two moves setting a climate target and securing energy supplies show South Africa effort to balance climate action with economic growth. The government says the plan will help the country move towards clean energy while keeping the economy strong and creating new opportunities.
