Parts of Delhi Noida, and Gurgaon woke up to chaos on Thursday as an early morning drizzle quickly escalated into a downpour flooding even the city most upscale neighborhoods. By mid-morning, cars were submerged, roads resembled rivers, and traffic across the National Capital Region came to a grinding halt.
Red Alert Issued
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its yellow alert to red after rain intensity increased rapidly, warning of moderate to heavy showers for several more hours. The morning bulletin predicted light to moderate rainfall in most places with heavier spells at isolated locations in Delhi and NCR.
Popular weather trackers reported up to 100 mm rainfall in certain pockets, with forecasts suggesting continued showers across Faridabad, Gurgaon, and Delhi till around 3–4 p.m.
Worst-Hit Areas
Sector 90 in Gurgaon was among the hardest hit, where residents blamed 15 years of unchecked encroachment for blocking drainage systems. In central Delhi, waterlogged streets and gridlocked traffic sparked online frustration.
As the waters rose, so did the jokes. A Gurgaon resident pitched a tongue-in-cheek “startup” for AI-powered boat services during rains, claiming it could predict the safest water routes in real-time. “DM to collaborate,” the user quipped. Another summed up the capital’s climate extremes, saying, “Delhi is the ultimate city of extremes. Extreme heat. Extreme cold. Extreme rains. Extreme tempers. Extreme passion.”
Google Searches Spike
According to Google Trends, “Delhi weather” became the top searched term on Thursday, with the highest activity from Delhi itself, followed by Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttarakhand. Related searches included “weather in Delhi”, “Delhi today weather”, and “Delhi weather forecast”.
With rain showing no sign of relenting, residents are left navigating knee-deep waters some with umbrellas, others with humor, and a few perhaps seriously considering that boat service proposal.
