The United Arab Emirates is preparing for one of the hottest stretches of the summer, with temperatures expected to soar to 46°C in Dubai and Abu Dhabi by Friday. The heatwave, accompanied by high humidity and dusty winds, is set to push discomfort levels to extreme highs across the country.
According to meteorological forecasts, daytime highs will remain well above 40°C throughout the week, peaking at 46°C in coastal cities. Humidity is expected to surge, especially in the evenings and early mornings, making conditions feel hotter than the actual temperature. The oppressive heat index is likely to create hazardous conditions for outdoor workers, commuters, and vulnerable groups such as the elderly and young children.
Dust storms to reduce visibility
Strong winds, reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h, may stir up dust across eastern and northern regions. This could lead to reduced visibility on major highways and a drop in air quality, increasing health risks for people with respiratory issues. Authorities are advising motorists to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during peak dust activity.
Nighttime temperatures are forecast to remain above 33–34°C in most areas, providing little relief from the sweltering conditions. The combination of high nighttime temperatures and elevated humidity is expected to strain cooling systems and increase electricity demand.
Precautionary measures
Residents are being urged to limit outdoor activities between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., stay hydrated, wear light, breathable clothing, and ensure pets are kept in shaded, cool environments. Employers have been reminded to follow midday break rules for outdoor workers to prevent heat-related illnesses.
This extreme heatwave is part of a 14-day hot weather stretch, following the UAE’s hottest spring on record. Earlier this summer, some inland areas recorded temperatures exceeding 50°C. Climate experts warn that rising global temperatures are making such prolonged heat events more frequent and intense in the region.
