Rising Tragedy Nepal Deadly Landslides and Floods Claim 60 Lives

Nepal is reeling under the impact of widespread floods and landslides that have claimed 60 lives in just three days, leaving several districts devastated. The situation remains dire as rescue teams continue to search for the missing amid torrential rainfall and damaged infrastructure.

According to Nepal Home Ministry, eight deaths were reported on Monday alone, with the Ilam district in Koshi province facing the heaviest toll. The district has recorded 37 fatalities, making it the worst-hit area in the current wave of disasters.

Ilam District Bears the Brunt

The severe downpours have triggered landslides across 11 districts, sweeping away homes, roads, and bridges. Many families have been displaced, while others continue to live in fear of fresh slides as rain persists in the hilly regions. Among the victims are 15 children, reflecting the scale of human loss the nation is witnessing.

Local authorities say rescue and relief operations are ongoing despite difficult terrain and blocked routes. “The Army, Police, and Armed Police Force have been deployed to affected zones to carry out evacuations and assist survivors,” a senior official from the National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Authority (NDRRMA) said.

Relief Announced for Victims

In an immediate response, the Nepal government has announced financial assistance of NPR 2,00,000 for the families of each deceased victim. Free medical care is also being provided to the injured across government hospitals.

Officials have warned of the possibility of further rainfall in eastern and central regions, urging residents in vulnerable zones to move to safer areas. The NDRRMA continues to monitor weather developments closely to coordinate rescue efforts and mitigate risks.

As Nepal struggles to recover from the destruction, the tragedy underscores the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in the Himalayan region a stark reminder of the growing challenges posed by climate change.
