Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday unveiled one of India’s most ambitious science and technology initiatives yet, announcing sweeping reforms and a massive financial commitment aimed at placing the country firmly on the global innovation map. Speaking at the inaugural Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave in New Delhi, Modi outlined a renewed national vision centred on high-risk, high-impact research and stronger private sector participation.
At the heart of this push is a newly established Research, Development and Innovation Fund worth Rs 1 lakh crore, designed to attract significant private investment and accelerate breakthroughs across cutting-edge scientific disciplines. The prime minister said the fund would open doors for transformative ideas, encourage deep-tech ventures and ultimately benefit the wider population through practical technological solutions.
Modi also highlighted a series of government reforms aimed at creating a more supportive ecosystem for scientists, startups and industry players. These include simplified financial processes, eased procurement rules for research institutions and enhanced opportunities for collaboration between academia and industry. The Anusandhan Research Foundation, he said, will continue strengthening university-driven research by promoting interdisciplinary studies and nurturing young scientific talent.
The prime minister praised the rising participation of women in STEM fields, calling it a powerful indicator of India’s changing socio-economic landscape and a crucial driver of the country scientific future. With global technological competition intensifying, Modi said India must not only keep pace but lead in shaping new frontiers of innovation.
The conclave, which brings together scientists, industry leaders, innovators and policymakers, marks the beginning of a larger national effort to bolster India’s research output and prepare the country for emerging challenges in sectors such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, biotechnology and clean energy.
