Jakarta, Indonesia—A majestic apex predator, the Javan tiger (P. tigris sondaica), long presumed extinct, may still be prowling the dense, remote forests of Java. A recent genetic analysis of a single hair sample has provided a “glimmer of hope” for conservationists and has ignited renewed, urgent efforts to confirm the tiger’s survival.
The Javan tiger was officially thought to have vanished from the wild in the 1970s, a victim of rampant habitat destruction and poaching on the world’s most populous island. However, a surprising clue emerged in 2019 when a team of local researchers found an unusual hair sample in the West Java region.
The Genetic Match That Re-Wrote Extinction
The breakthrough came when the hair, discovered on a fence at a community plantation in South Sukabumi, was subjected to DNA testing. The results, detailed in a study published in the Oryx Journal, were striking. The genetic analysis showed a 97.8% match to the DNA of the Javan tiger, and importantly, was found to be genetically distinct from other subspecies like the Sumatran and Bengal tigers.
“Through this research, we have determined that the Javan tiger still exists in the wild,” said co-author Wirdateti Wirdateti, a key researcher involved in the study.
This finding suggests that a population of the critically endangered species may have endured in untouched corners of the island, hidden from human eyes for decades.
Calls for Urgent Field Investigations
The discovery, while compelling, has prompted immediate calls for extensive follow-up investigations. Researchers believe the tiger may be venturing closer to human-populated areas, such as Sukabumi, possibly due to habitat disturbance exacerbated by drought conditions in 2019.
“There’s still a possibility that the Javan tiger is in the Sukabumi forest,” said Kalih Raksasewu, a key researcher.
The scientific community is now pushing for comprehensive field studies to definitively confirm the animal’s presence. These studies include:
• Setting up camera traps in potential habitats.
• Searching for fresh droppings and other physical signs.
• Looking for additional evidence like footprints and claw marks.

“The most important thing is the next steps we take in the future,” stated Didik Raharyono, a leading Javan tiger expert.
