Jamshedpur – The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has taken a major step toward supporting the nation’s energy transition, with Director General Dr. N. Kalaiselvi laying the foundation stone for new test facilities dedicated to the National Green Hydrogen Mission at the CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) in Jamshedpur.
This initiative is designed to create unique and robust infrastructure aimed at significantly boosting indigenous hydrogen production across India. The new facilities will focus on developing and testing technologies crucial for the green hydrogen ecosystem, including standards and safety evaluation for hydrogen transport pipelines and related equipment.
Aligning with National Goals
The announcement was made during the celebration of the Platinum Jubilee (75th foundation day) of the CSIR-NML, which has a long-standing mandate in minerals, metals, and materials research. Dr. Kalaiselvi, who is also the first woman to hold the prestigious DG position, emphasized that these interventions are critical for enhancing India’s global standing and fulfilling the ambitious goals of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) and ‘Viksit Bharat 2047 Developed India 2047.
She stressed the importance of viewing every technical challenge as an opportunity to develop indigenous technologies and highlighted the need for strategic partnerships with startups to drive local innovation. The event was held on November 26, which coincided with Constitution Day, an observance that was marked by reading out the Preamble.
The development of these test facilities is a key component of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position India as a global hub for the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives, thereby decarbonizing the economy and reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports.
