A new research brief why the Great Pyramid of Giza has remained largely intact for more than 4,500 years despite repeated seismic activity in Egypt.
Researchers studying the pyramid’s vibration patterns found that its natural frequency how it tends to oscillate when shaken lies between about 2.0 and 2.6 hertz, while the surrounding soil vibrates at a much lower frequency of around 0.6 hertz. This mismatch may reduce the risk of resonance, a dangerous phenomenon where ground shaking amplifies structural motion during earthquakes.
Using a technique known as horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) analysis, scientists measured tiny background vibrations at 37 locations around and inside the pyramid. These included ambient movements caused by wind, traffic, and human activity, allowing researchers to study the structure without damaging it.
The findings suggest that the pyramid’s geometry its broad base, low center of mass, and massive limestone blocks may have unintentionally contributed to its seismic resilience. The structure’s stiff and symmetrical form also helps distribute stress more evenly during ground shaking.
However, researchers caution that this does not mean the pyramid was deliberately engineered for earthquake resistance. Modern seismic engineering considers many additional factors beyond simple frequency matching, including soil conditions, structural flexibility, and energy dissipation during strong shaking.
The study also notes the importance of survivorship bias: many ancient structures that failed or collapsed over time are no longer present for comparison, meaning surviving monuments may not fully represent ancient engineering practices.
While the Great Pyramid has withstood earthquakes such as the 1992 Cairo event with only minor damage to outer casing stones scientists emphasize that its endurance likely reflects robust empirical construction methods rather than advanced seismic design knowledge.
Overall, the research highlights that the pyramid’s survival is not accidental, but also not proof of intentional earthquake engineering rather a combination of massive design, strong materials, and favorable structural geometry.
