August 10, 2026: The world mangrove forests appear to be showing signs of recovery after decades of widespread destruction according to a recent study examining four decades of global data.
Researchers found that since 2010, mangrove forests have expanded by more than 2,000 square kilometres. For the first time since satellite monitoring began in 1984, the rate at which mangroves are expanding has surpassed the rate at which they are declining.
Mangroves are important coastal ecosystems that provide shelter and breeding grounds for numerous species while also helping protect communities from flooding, erosion, storms, cyclones and tsunamis.
They are also highly effective carbon stores. Research indicates that mangrove forests can hold roughly four times more carbon than other land based forests, making their conservation important for climate change mitigation.
Decades of mangrove loss
Mangroves were historically cleared for activities including rice cultivation, oil palm plantations aquaculture and waste disposal. Between the 1980s and 2010, the world lost more than 12,000 square kilometres of mangrove forests, an area roughly comparable to the size of Jamaica.
The decline reduced the ability of these ecosystems to store carbon and protect vulnerable coastal regions.
However, the latest research suggests that the long-term decline may be changing.
Regional differences in recovery
The recovery of mangroves is not happening in the same way everywhere.
Myanmar and Indonesia were major hotspots of mangrove loss before 2010. The decline has since stabilised in these regions, partly following stronger protection policies introduced after devastating disasters, including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and Cyclone Nargis in 2008.
Australia has also recorded an expansion of mangrove forests. Researchers say rising sea levels have allowed tidal waters to move further inland creating suitable salty conditions for mangroves to grow on floodplains.
While this can be beneficial in areas such as abandoned aquaculture ponds the expansion of mangroves into freshwater ecosystems in northern Australia can create challenges for Traditional Owners and local environments.
Mangroves moving onto new mudflats
The study also found that mangroves are increasingly establishing themselves on newly formed coastal mudflats.
This may appear surprising because rising sea levels can threaten mangrove ecosystems. However sediment carried by rivers can create new areas of land suitable for mangrove growth.
The trend highlights the resilience of mangrove ecosystems although researchers caution that new growth does not necessarily mean previously damaged forests are recovering successfully.
Expansion and degradation happening together
Despite the overall expansion, mangrove ecosystems continue to face degradation.
Degradation occurs when the tree canopy becomes thinner and less dense, indicating declining ecosystem health. Human activities such as harvesting and pollution, along with extreme weather events, are among the factors contributing to this deterioration.
The causes vary from one region to another, making long term monitoring important.
More protection and restoration needed
The expansion of mangrove forests is encouraging, but researchers warn against becoming complacent. Evidence indicates that mangrove forests are still experiencing degradation in many areas, threatening coastal ecosystems and their ability to support climate action.
Experts say stronger policies for mangrove conservation and restoration are needed. International initiatives such as the Global Mangrove Alliance and Mangrove Breakthrough are also working to increase awareness and support protection efforts.
Further research and satellite monitoring will be important to understand how climate change, sea level rise, human activity and extreme weather are affecting mangroves in different parts of the world.
The recovery of these forests offers an important environmental opportunity, but protecting existing mangroves and ensuring that newly expanding forests remain healthy will be essential for maintaining their benefits for coastal communities, biodiversity and the global climate.
