Florida Lake Cuts Invasive Hydrilla From 95% to Less Than 1% Using Grass Carp

 

Lake Baldwin in Florida’s Orlando area has become a notable example of using fish to control an invasive aquatic weed. Wildlife managers introduced grass carp after hydrilla had spread across about 95% of the lake, reducing its coverage to less than 1%.

According to the documented case study, the treatment cost about $8,499, or roughly $43 per acre. Grass carp a plant eating fish native to parts of Asia have been used in more than 70 public lakes across Florida to control hydrilla.

Hydrilla is not native to Florida and spread through waterways after entering the aquarium trade. The fast growing weed can form dense mats near the water surface, restricting boat traffic, interfering with swimming and fishing, and competing with native aquatic plants.

Florida managers began using grass carp as a biological control measure after concerns about the fish escaping and reproducing in natural waterways. The development of triploid grass carp, which are functionally sterile, helped make their use more practical under controlled conditions.

Grass carp can consume large quantities of aquatic vegetation. Adult fish can eat up to their body weight in hydrilla in a day under suitable conditions. Research has indicated that carefully managed stocking rates can provide strong control while allowing some less preferred vegetation to remain.

The Lake Baldwin case also showed that hydrilla could be dramatically reduced without eliminating the lake overall fish community. However, the method carries environmental risks. Overstocking can remove too much submerged vegetation, potentially affecting water clarity and changing habitats for fish that depend on dense aquatic plants.

Because grass carp are difficult to remove once introduced, Florida requires permits and restricts their use to suitable contained water bodies or lakes protected by barriers.

The Lake Baldwin experience highlights both the potential and limitations of biological control: grass carp can provide a relatively affordable way to tackle severe hydrilla infestations, but careful stocking and long term monitoring are essential to prevent unintended ecological effects.
