The Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest is showing how the gradual impacts of climate change can undermine ecosystems and livelihoods long before a major disaster strikes.
Researchers visiting the Sundarbans in May 2026 found dry and cracked ponds where fish had previously supported local families. For communities across the Ganges Brahmaputra Meghna delta, declining freshwater availability is becoming part of a wider pattern of environmental and economic stress.
The Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spans parts of Bangladesh and India and provides food, income and shelter for millions of people. Its mangrove forests are also considered an important natural defence against cyclones and rising sea levels.
But communities are increasingly facing failing embankments, rising salinity and deteriorating freshwater resources.
Embankments designed to protect settlements and agricultural land from tidal waters are being damaged by erosion and extreme weather. Repairs are often temporary, using materials such as mud and bamboo ahead of the monsoon rather than permanent reinforcement.
At the same time, saltwater intrusion is affecting farmland that once produced multiple rice harvests. Freshwater ponds used for aquaculture are also becoming increasingly brackish, reducing the availability of fish species that traditionally provided valuable household income.
The impacts of climate vulnerability do not always appear as a single catastrophic event. Instead, they can accumulate over years until ecosystems and livelihoods cross a critical threshold.
Increasing salinity, for example, can gradually alter a pond until it is no longer suitable for freshwater aquaculture. Similarly, embankments may deteriorate over time when erosion and damage occur faster than communities can repair them.
For affected households, adaptation often involves difficult economic choices. Communities are forming self-help groups and cooperatives, taking up wage labour or sending family members to cities in search of employment.
These decisions illustrate how climate adaptation increasingly takes place at the household level rather than only through large government or development programmes.
The experience of the Sundarbans also highlights a challenge in the way climate adaptation funding is often delivered.
Financial assistance frequently focuses on clearly defined disasters such as cyclones and floods, where damage can be measured before and after an event. Slower processes such as salinization, erosion and declining agricultural productivity can receive less attention despite their long term impact on communities.
Both the Bangladeshi and Indian sides of the Sundarbans receive climate related financing. However, researchers argue that relatively little of this support reaches households facing decisions about whether to continue farming and fishing or seek alternative livelihoods.
Investment often focuses on infrastructure such as embankments and environmental projects such as mangrove restoration. While these interventions are important, they may not directly address the immediate economic pressures facing individual families.
The problems emerging in the Sundarbans are not unique to the region. Other major river deltas, including the Mekong in Southeast Asia, the Nile in Egypt and the Niger in southern Nigeria, are also facing combinations of rising salinity, erosion, water stress and pressure on livelihoods.
The Sundarbans therefore offers an early indication of what prolonged climate and environmental stress can look like in densely populated delta regions.
For communities already experiencing declining freshwater resources and increasingly fragile livelihoods, the crisis is not a distant possibility. It is unfolding gradually, through empty ponds, damaged embankments, shrinking harvests and difficult decisions about how families will survive.
