Cyclone Fengal Triggers Heavy Rainfall Alert in Bengaluru, Sparks Concerns Over School Safety

Bengaluru and parts of South Interior Karnataka are bracing for intense rainfall on Monday as Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall along the Tamil Nadu coast on November 30, continues to impact weather patterns. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of very heavy rain across the region, raising concerns about potential disruptions.

Cyclone’s Progress and Impact

The IMD reported that the depression, a remnant of Cyclone Fengal, moved west-northwestward at 7 km/h and was centered at 11:30 PM on December 1 near Villupuram, Tamil Nadu. The weakened storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Karnataka and parts of Kerala.

Schools Remain Open Amid Safety Concerns

Despite the IMD’s warnings, schools and colleges in Bengaluru remain open, prompting widespread concern among parents. Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) saw a flood of reactions from residents urging authorities to declare a holiday.

One user questioned the decision, saying, “Horrible weather in Bengaluru. Wondering why the government hasn’t declared a holiday for schools today.”

Another wrote, @DC_BUrban Please declare a holiday for Bengaluru schools. It is raining continuously, and we are worried about our children’s safety.”

Amid the serious appeals, some users shared sarcastic takes, with one post quipping, “Since the Sun is shining bright today, the meteorology dept has decided that schools will remain fully functional in Bengaluru.”

Search Trends Reflect Weather Concerns

Google Trends showed a sharp rise in searches for “weather” early Monday morning, especially in regions affected by the cyclone, including Puducherry, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Jammu and Kashmir. Popular related queries included “tomorrow weather Bangalore” and “Bangalore weather tomorrow.”

What Lies Ahead?

As Cyclone Fengal continues its westward journey, the IMD has advised residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions against potential flooding and waterlogging. The local administration is being urged to respond to public concerns about safety and infrastructure during this period of intense weather activity.
