Union Home Minister Amit Shah has praised India’s remarkable progress in weather forecasting and disaster preparedness, crediting the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for elevating the country’s capabilities to match those of developed nations.
Chairing a high-level review meeting on flood management, Shah stressed the need for close coordination between central agencies like the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) with state governments. He also called on the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the NDMA, and the National Remote Sensing Centre to remain alert to potential risks from glacial lakes, whose sudden outbursts can trigger devastating floods.
Reaffirming India’s commitment to a ‘zero casualty approach’ in disaster management, Shah urged officials to make better use of space technology and improve the accuracy of weather forecasts. He underlined the importance of faster and clearer early warning systems that reach state and district authorities in time to prevent loss of life and property.
Shah said that in the last decade, India has built strong foundations in disaster risk reduction, thanks to technological integration and capacity building across various sectors. These steps, he noted, are essential as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events like floods.
With the monsoon season approaching, the Home Minister’s call for preparedness reflects the government’s focus on minimizing disaster risks and protecting vulnerable communities through better forecasting and timely action.
