Cyclone Fengal Likely to Hit Tamil Nadu Puducherry Coast by November 30 Morning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal will intensify into Cyclone Fengal within 12 hours, as it moves northwestward. The system is expected to cross the northern Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts, between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, on the morning of November 30, bringing heavy rainfall and gusty winds.

Current Location and Forecast

The IMD reported the depression is currently stationary near latitude 9.0°N and longitude 82.1°E, about:

  • 100 km east-northeast of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka.
  • 550 km south-southeast of Chennai.
  • 370 km southeast of Karaikal.
  • 470 km southeast of Puducherry.

The system is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm and move north-northwest, skirting Sri Lanka’s coast. Upon landfall, wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, are likely.

Preparedness in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Rainfall Updates

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next two days. Puducherry received 7.5 cm of rainfall, while Karaikal recorded 9.5 cm in the last 24 hours ending Wednesday evening.

Schools and Colleges Closure

Educational institutions in Puducherry are closed on Thursday due to heavy rain warnings.

Government Measures

Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy reviewed the preparedness of disaster management teams, PWD, and municipal authorities.

Instructions were issued to relocate residents from low-lying areas to relief camps. A 24/7 control room has been established to address emergencies.

Warnings for Fisherfolk and Residents

Fisherfolk have been advised against venturing into the sea, with heavy rain and rough sea conditions expected along the Bay of Bengal coast. Coastal residents are urged to stay cautious as the storm could result in localized flooding and disruptions.

Coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh are also likely to experience significant rainfall over the next few days. Cyclone Fengal is being closely monitored, and authorities are on high alert to mitigate its impact on lives and property.
