rainfallA deep depression brewing over the northwest Bay of Bengal made landfall between Sagar Island and Khepupara near Raidighi in West Bengal late morning on May 29, 2025, bringing with it heavy rainfall and squally winds, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed. The system is expected to track north-northeastward, maintain its strength through the evening, and gradually weaken into a depression overnight.

Widespread weather disturbances are expected over the next 48 hours, with the northeast and eastern parts of India bracing for intense rainfall and strong winds. Meghalaya is forecast to receive extremely heavy rainfall on May 30, with some areas expected to see more than 30 cm of rain. Assam is also likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall, with accumulations crossing 20 cm in certain regions.

Other northeastern states, including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim, are also likely to be affected by heavy to very heavy rainfall through May 30.

Squally winds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are expected to continue across the region, prompting warnings for fishermen and local authorities. Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha could receive heavy to very heavy rain (7-20 cm) on May 29, accompanied by coastal winds reaching up to 70 kmph. The sea is predicted to remain rough to very rough along the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh, raising the alert level for maritime activity.

On the western coast, the system is also driving intense rainfall. Extremely heavy showers are forecast for Tamil Nadu, coastal Karnataka, and southern interior Karnataka on May 29, with Kerala and Mahe expected to experience similar downpours on both May 29 and 30. The Konkan and Goa regions are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 29 as well.

Inland, parts of central and northern India will not be spared. Thunder squalls with wind speeds up to 70 kmph are expected across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh through May 30. Vidarbha, Bihar, and Gangetic West Bengal are also on alert for heavy rainfall.

The western Himalayan region is forecast to see significant rainfall from May 30 through June 2, with heavy showers likely in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Meanwhile, dust storms are expected to affect West Rajasthan on May 29-30, and isolated areas in the region may face heat wave conditions on May 30 and 31.

In a related development, the southwest monsoon has officially advanced into parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, the northern Bay of Bengal, northeastern states, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim. IMD projects the monsoon will move further into West Bengal and Bihar within the next 48 hours, signaling the onset of the rainy season for much of eastern India.

The evolving weather pattern has prompted advisories across multiple states, urging residents to remain indoors, fishermen to avoid venturing out to sea, and disaster preparedness teams to stay on high alert.
