Goa reels under record heat index of 47.8°C, authorities urge precautions amid sweltering humidity

Goa is currently enduring one of its most intense bouts of heat and humidity, with the heat index or ‘feels-like’ temperature touching a staggering 47.8°C, surpassing levels recorded in many parts of North India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded alerts, citing that the oppressive heat is being driven not just by rising temperatures but extremely high humidity, making daily life difficult across the coastal state.

Goa hotter than Delhi, Bhopal, and even parts of Kerala

Traditionally known for its moderate coastal climate, Goa is now witnessing weather conditions comparable to cities like Delhi, Bhopal, and even humid regions of Kerala. However, the difference lies in the combination of temperature and humidity, which has sent the heat index soaring. While the actual air temperature in most parts of Goa has hovered around 35°C–36°C, humidity levels above 70% have created a dangerous combination, pushing the perceived heat well beyond comfort zones.

IMD forecasts possible rainfall relief

Amidst the oppressive conditions, IMD has forecast possible rainfall in the coming days, which could bring much-needed relief. Localised thunderstorms and scattered showers are expected due to moisture-laden winds and pre-monsoon activity building over the Arabian Sea. However, officials have warned that until rainfall begins, heat index levels may remain elevated during daytime hours.

Health authorities issue precautions

Goa’s Health Department and disaster management officials have issued urgent advisories to prevent heat-related illnesses, especially among children, the elderly, outdoor workers, and tourists. Residents and visitors are being urged to:

  • Stay indoors between 12 PM and 4 PM, the hottest part of the day
  • Drink plenty of fluids, including water, lemon juice, and ORS
  • Wear loose, light-colored clothing
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities unless absolutely necessary
  • Use umbrellas, caps, and sunglasses when stepping out.
