CHENNAI: With the northeast monsoon in full swing, Tamil Nadu is bracing for another bout of heavy rains. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has predicted that a fresh low-pressure area will form over the Andaman Sea by Sunday, likely bringing intense rainfall back to the coastal and delta regions from December 16.
On Thursday, vehicles waded through waterlogged roads near Thirumangalam Metro Station, as heavy rains continued to lash parts of Chennai and surrounding areas. However, meteorologists predict that the current weather system, a well-marked low-pressure area, will weaken by Saturday as it moves toward south Tamil Nadu and the Western Ghats.
The RMC has issued an orange alert for Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal for Tuesday. Additionally, six districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall on Monday, with the intensity peaking on December 17 and 18.
“The coastal region and delta districts will need to prepare for the next spell of heavy rain as the new low-pressure area develops,” said an official from the RMC.
This season has seen back-to-back weather systems impacting Tamil Nadu, bringing frequent bouts of heavy rain. The upcoming system over the Andaman Sea is anticipated to deliver yet another round of intense showers, particularly in the coastal and delta belts.
Residents and local authorities are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions as rainfall activity is expected to intensify in the coming days.
