The devastating torrential rains that struck western Japan in 2018 highlighted the need for improved disaster preparedness, especially in Hiroshima Prefecture, where many residents were caught off guard by mudslides and other natural disasters. In response, a range of innovative tools using virtual and augmented reality, as well as interactive games, have been developed to educate and protect communities.
VR Brings Disaster Risks to Life in Hiroshima
Hiroshima Prefecture, in partnership with Hiroshima University and Tokyo-based disaster prevention company Rikei Corp., has created VR-based materials to simulate natural disaster scenarios. These tools aim to raise awareness of the dangers posed by disasters such as mudslides and heavy rains. By immersing residents in realistic simulations, the program helps people understand risks and the importance of timely evacuation.
In Aichi Prefecture, a local NGO developed “Kizuki,” a disaster scenario card game designed for senior citizens. Played in teams of three, participants must prioritize and manage simultaneous crisis events like being “trapped in the toilet” or dealing with “unexpected evacuee visits” using limited resources.
This engaging activity not only fosters problem-solving but also emphasizes teamwork in managing real-life emergency situations, making it an effective tool for educating older adults about disaster response.
AR and VR Workshops for Schools and Communities
Tokyo-based association AR Bosei (ARB) is leveraging augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies to conduct disaster prevention workshops in schools and local communities. These workshops offer immersive drills, helping participants visualize disaster scenarios and practice appropriate responses in a safe, controlled environment.
Japan’s proactive adoption of interactive and immersive tools like VR simulations, AR workshops, and disaster preparedness games highlights a forward-thinking approach to disaster management. By incorporating technology and community-focused methods, these initiatives are equipping residents with the knowledge and skills to act swiftly and effectively in the face of natural disasters.
