A catastrophic explosion at a chemical factory in Thane’s Dombivli near Mumbai has resulted in the deaths of eight people, with at least 60 others injured. The blast occurred on Thursday following the explosion of a boiler inside the factory, leading to a massive fire.
Witnesses reported hearing three explosions from the factory, located in MIDC Phase 2. The impact of the explosion created a large crater, with shockwaves damaging nearby factories and shattering windows in adjacent buildings. The explosion caused heavy iron beams to bend and blew off the roofs of neighboring structures, resulting in extensive damage.
The fire spread to two other buildings, including a car showroom. Rescue teams, including NDRF, TDRF, and the fire brigade, have been deployed to the site, with around 15 fire engines working to control the blaze. Officials estimate that it will take over four hours to extinguish the fire.
Some people are feared trapped inside the factory, and rescue teams are using drones to locate them. A distress call was made around 1:40 pm, and preliminary reports indicate that several vehicles and houses in the vicinity have also been damaged.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that eight people have been rescued and arrangements are being made to treat the injured. He added that more ambulances are on standby, and efforts are being coordinated with local authorities to manage the situation. Fadnavis expressed his condolences and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the site and announced immediate actions, including the closure of high-risk “red-category” industrial units. Shinde also stated that an ABC classification of companies will be undertaken, and thousands of high-intensity units will be closed to prevent future incidents. He called for a case of culpable homicide to be registered and announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the victims. The state government will also cover the medical expenses of the injured.
The explosion’s impact was felt as far as a kilometer away, with nearby Sai Temple suffering shockwave damage while devotees were inside. Fortunately, they managed to escape to safety.
The rescue operation is ongoing, with officials working tirelessly to ensure the safety and recovery of those still trapped.
