Shocking Study Claims Says Arctic Could Be Ice-Free by 2027

Breaking News, Climate Actions, Environment
The Arctic is on track to witness its first ice-free day as early as 2027, according to a study published in Nature Communications. Researchers from Colorado University Boulder and the University of Gothenburg revealed that the phenomenon, defined as the reduction of sea ice to less than one million square kilometers, signals a significant turning point in climate change. Arctic sea ice is already melting at an alarming rate of over 12% per decade, compared to its average extent between 1981 and 2010, as per NASA data. Using hundreds of climate simulations, the study predicts that while the first ice-free day may occur within the next 9 to 20 years, the most pessimistic scenario places this milestone just three years away. Once the first ice-free day occurs, it could last anywhere from ...

El Nino Weather Pattern Cause High Global temperatures and Extreme Hearwave in 2024

Breaking News, Climate Actions, Disasters
Record warmth has been easing as El Niño shows signs of ending. The return of the cold weather phenomenon La Nina this year should help bring down temperatures after several months of record global heat, the United Nations Weather Agency said on Monday. The impact is likely to be felt in the coming months as the El Nino weather pattern that causes global temperatures and extreme weather from mid-2023 "shows signs of ending,"  the UN's World Meteorological Organization said in its latest update. The WMO warns, however, that global temperatures will rise in the long term due to human-caused climate change, which continues to worsen extreme climates and increase seasonal rainfall and weather. La Nina is associated with cooling sea surface temperatures, changes in wind, rainfall, and ...

India’s Antarctic Research to Feature in School Textbooks

Breaking News, Climate Actions, Disasters, Idea & Innovations
India's significant contributions to research in the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Himalayas are set to become part of school textbooks, as the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences collaborates with the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to incorporate the latest developments into the curriculum. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, revealed that NCERT has formed a committee tasked with highlighting the importance of research in these regions, including Antarctica, the Arctic, the Himalayas, and climate change, in school textbooks. This initiative aims to update the content, which currently lacks recent advancements in Antarctica, Arctic, and Himalayan research. Following a rationalization exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic, certain to...

Avalanche from Mt Manaslu Causes Overflow of Birendra Lake in Nepal

Breaking News, Disasters
Nepal's Birendra Lake, nestled below the towering slopes of Mt Manaslu, recently experienced a dramatic surge in water levels after being struck by a massive avalanche on Sunday morning. The avalanche, cascading down from the heights of Mt Manaslu, triggered an overflow of Birendra Lake, raising concerns about potential flooding downstream. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage or casualties thus far, as the site of the overflow is located away from human settlements. However, officials have issued precautionary notices to residents living in downstream areas along the river to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential ramifications of the heightened water flow. Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Home Ministry, emphasized the need for residents near the a...

Arctic Glaciers Raises the Environmental Concerns due to traces of Common Sunscreen Ingredients Found

Climate Actions, Environment
In a paper published by the researchers, they noted that, for some of these chemicals, it marks the first time their presence has been reported in the snow in Svalbard. The chemicals include UV filters used in sunscreens, such as benzophenone-3 (BP3), and fragrances found in soaps and shampoos. The findings highlight the increasing challenge of understanding the distribution and behavior of these contaminants in remote regions, where primary sources of pollution remain largely unknown. The far-reaching consequences of human activity on the environment are once again underscored as a study reveals traces of 13 common ingredients found in sunscreens and personal care products in the snowpack of five Arctic glaciers in the Svalbard archipelago. The study, conducted by polar scientist Maria...
