Tamil Nadu, which has already recorded an impressive Northeast monsoon season with excess rainfall, is now bracing for another spell of precipitation that could disrupt Christmas celebrations across the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a well-marked low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, along with an associated cyclonic circulation, is advancing toward North Tamil Nadu. Currently positioned near the South Andhra coast, the system is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to the region starting Tuesday, December 24, and continuing through Thursday, December 26.
North coastal districts, including Chennai, are likely to see widespread rains during this period, with heavy downpours forecast in isolated pockets of Chengalpattu, Viluppuram, and Cuddalore districts, as well as Puducherry. Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected in some areas, particularly on December 25 and 26.
A yellow alert has been issued across Tamil Nadu, urging residents to remain updated on weather conditions. The rainfall is expected to coincide with holiday activities, raising concerns about traffic congestion and potential disruptions to outdoor celebrations.
Authorities have also cautioned fisherfolk against venturing into the sea until the weather stabilizes on Thursday.
Despite the potential inconvenience, the rains add to an already remarkable monsoon season for the region. Between October 1 and December 22, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal recorded 575 mm of rainfall, exceeding the seasonal average of 429 mm by 34%.
As residents prepare for another round of rain, the holiday spirit might take a hit, but the state remains resilient in managing the challenges posed by the weather.
