Wayanad Landslides: 106 pepole Dead, many missing and Hundreds Feared Trapped in Kerala

Wayanad, Kerala – July 30, 2024: In a tragic turn of events, massive landslides early Tuesday morning have claimed 106 lives in Kerala’s Wayanad district. The calamity has left hundreds feared trapped, with rescue operations underway amidst challenging conditions.

The landslides struck the hilly areas of Meppadi, Mundakkai Town, and Chooral Mala, causing widespread devastation. Kerala Revenue Minister K Rajan initially confirmed eight fatalities, a number that has now risen to 106 as rescue efforts continue.

Government and Rescue Efforts

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that all available government agencies have mobilized to conduct rescue operations. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has deployed teams from the Fireforce and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), with additional NDRF units en route to the affected areas. Additionally, two teams from the Kannur Defence Security Corps have been dispatched to aid in rescue efforts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating on social media platform X, “My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones, and my prayers are with those injured. I have assured Kerala’s Chief Minister of all possible help.”

Former Congress MP from Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi, expressed his sorrow and assured that he would speak to Union ministers to secure additional assistance for Wayanad.

Impact and Challenges

Local authorities report that a one-year-old child from a Nepali family in Thondernad village was among the casualties. Many more are reported injured, with several vehicles washed away. The rescue efforts face significant obstacles due to ongoing heavy rainfall, which has triggered further landslides. Notably, a secondary landslide struck near Chooral Mala School around 4 am, flooding the school and nearby structures, resulting in additional fatalities.
