Monsoon Stalls Across India as Rainfall Deficit Reaches 64%, Raising Alarm for Agriculture and Water Supply

India southwest monsoon has entered a worrying phase after a dramatic slowdown in rainfall activity during June, triggering concerns over agriculture, water availability, food prices and economic growth. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country received only 19.2 mm of rainfall between June 4 and June 15 against the normal 53.7 mm, resulting in a massive 64 percent rainfall deficit.

Satellite images from INSAT-3DS reveal unusually clear skies over large parts of peninsular, central and eastern India, where thick monsoon cloud bands are normally seen at this time of year. Although the monsoon has officially advanced into several regions, including parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and central India, rainfall activity has remained significantly below expectations.

Unusual Atmospheric Pattern Behind Monsoon Slowdown

Meteorologists attribute the weak monsoon performance to an abnormal shift in upper atmospheric wind systems. A southward displacement of the westerly jet stream has disrupted the easterly jet that normally supports monsoon circulation across the country.

Experts explain that moisture is not the issue. Large amounts of moisture remain available over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, but weather systems are struggling to move inland and develop into rain bearing clouds. Without sufficient upward movement of air, cloud formations remain weak and fail to generate widespread rainfall.

As a result many parts of the country are witnessing cloudy conditions with only light drizzle or isolated showers, while the powerful thunderstorm clouds responsible for heavy monsoon rains remain scarce. The situation has created what weather experts describe as a “monsoon pause,” leaving large areas of central, eastern and southern India facing deficient rainfall.

The current development also aligns with earlier concerns regarding El Niño conditions. In May 2026, the IMD revised its seasonal monsoon forecast downward to 90 percent of the long period average the weakest projection in more than a decade. El Niño events are known to weaken monsoon circulation and reduce rainfall over India.

Farmers, Water Resources and Economy Face Growing Risks

The prolonged dry spell is creating anxiety among farmers across several states, particularly in rain fed agricultural regions. Kharif crops such as rice, cotton and soybean depend heavily on timely monsoon rains, and delayed precipitation could affect sowing activities, reduce yields and increase irrigation costs.

Agriculture contributes nearly 18% to India GDP and supports almost half of the country’s workforce. A weak monsoon could therefore impact rural incomes, consumer demand and overall economic growth. Rising food prices may also become a concern if crop production declines significantly.

Water resources are another area of concern. Reservoirs and groundwater systems rely heavily on monsoon recharge, and continued rainfall deficits could increase pressure on drinking water supplies and irrigation networks. Hydropower generation may also suffer if reservoir levels fail to improve.

Several regions including Vidarbha and Marathwada in Maharashtra, are already experiencing extended dry conditions. Urban residents in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru are dealing with humid weather and scattered showers that provide little meaningful relief.

Weather models suggest that conditions may improve after June 20 if the easterly jet strengthens and weather systems from the Bay of Bengal begin moving inland more effectively. Forecasters are cautiously optimistic that rainfall activity could increase across parts of Maharashtra and other regions during the latter half of June.

Until then millions of Indians remain dependent on a monsoon that has arrived on paper but is yet to deliver the widespread rainfall needed to sustain crops replenish water reserves and support economic activity.
