Heat Stress Intensifies India Advances Clean Energy Now Scientists Call for Smarter Restoration

New scientific studies and policy developments this week underscored the growing urgency of climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration and sustainable resource management, with major developments spanning India, Europe and global climate research.

India’s Chhattisgarh government notified its Compressed Biogas (CBG) Policy 2026, aiming to accelerate waste to energy projects by streamlining approvals, ensuring reliable feedstock supply and promoting compressed biogas use in transport. The policy also encourages research digital monitoring and farmer participation in biomass collection, making it one of the country most comprehensive state level frameworks for the CBG sector.

Urban restoration also came under scrutiny after Bengaluru’s record plantation drive, during which nearly 1.5 million saplings were planted using the Miyawaki method. Ecologists cautioned that large scale tree planting alone cannot restore urban ecosystems and called for restoration strategies tailored to local landscapes. Experts recommended combining native trees with grasses and shrubs while considering groundwater availability, biodiversity and long term ecological planning instead of focusing solely on plantation numbers.

In a breakthrough for industrial pollution control, researchers from South Ural State University and international collaborators developed an electrochemical wastewater treatment system capable of removing persistent textile dyes without chemical additives. Laboratory trials showed complete decolourisation within 90 minutes, with the technology maintaining efficiency after repeated treatment cycles. Researchers said the system could support the development of compact wastewater treatment units for industrial use.

Climate research published this week highlighted the accelerating impacts of global warming on human health. A study in Nature Climate Change found that hazardous heat has become more frequent, intense and widespread since the 1970s. Using Copernicus Climate Change Service data, researchers reported rising “feels-like” temperatures, hotter nights, longer heat stress seasons and a sharp increase in the number of people exposed to extreme heat. The study estimated that around one billion more people now experience at least one day of extreme heat annually compared with the 1970s.

Another study warned that climate change is increasing flood risks in the Alps more than previously projected. Researchers from the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research found that today’s 100-year floods could become 5-15 per cent more intense by the end of the century and recur every 45 to 80 years. The findings based on hourly river flow data, suggest earlier models underestimated flood risk by relying on daily rainfall measurements.

In Spain, researchers called for a shift in wildfire management following the deadly Los Gallardos wildfire, which claimed 13 lives. They argued that disaster response should prioritise protecting people rather than measuring success solely by the area burned. The experts stressed the importance of evacuation planning, effective warning systems, multilingual communication and community preparedness as climate change increases wildfire risks.

Meanwhile, scientists at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, reported that nearly one fourth of monsoon rainfall over the north Western Ghats evaporates before reaching the ground. The first observational estimate of its kind in India found that rainfall evaporation averaged 25 per cent during the southwest monsoon, with significant day to day variation. Researchers said the findings would improve weather forecasting and climate models by better representing rainfall processes and atmospheric cooling.

Together these developments highlight the increasing need for science based policies, climate resilient infrastructure and ecosystem specific restoration strategies as countries respond to the growing impacts of climate change.
