Damascus, July 20: The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) has donated three tracked hydraulic excavators to Syria’s Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management to strengthen the country disaster preparedness, humanitarian response and post disaster recovery efforts.
The handover took place during a ceremony at the ministry’s headquarters in Damascus, attended by Deputy Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Dr Ahmed Qazziz, Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) Resident Representative in Syria Ghadfan Ajjoub, and AKF Syria Executive Director Dr Muhannad Obeido.
Under a memorandum signed by both organisations, the ministry will receive ownership of the excavators, which are equipped with fuel efficient technology and electronic safety systems. The machinery will be deployed for humanitarian operations, civil defence, disaster management and rehabilitation activities.
The donation builds on a cooperation agreement signed in October 2025 between the Aga Khan Foundation and the ministry, aimed at strengthening Syria’s disaster risk management capacity and improving emergency preparedness in line with international standards.
Deputy Minister Qazziz said continued cooperation between the two organisations would enhance rapid emergency response and strengthen national capabilities to protect communities and support recovery efforts following disasters.
AKDN Resident Representative Ghadfan Ajjoub said the initiative supports government efforts to develop coordinated strategies, plans and operational systems that help local communities prepare for and respond effectively to emergencies.
AKF Syria Executive Director Dr Muhannad Obeido said the donation marks another step in expanding technical and operational cooperation with the ministry. He noted that the excavators would improve the capacity of emergency response teams, particularly during earthquakes and floods, by providing essential equipment for rescue and rehabilitation operations.
The initiative is part of the Aga Khan Development Network’s broader commitment to supporting Syria through projects valued at more than €100 million during 2026–2027 focusing on strengthening resilience, disaster preparedness and community recovery.
