Retired Wind Turbine Blades Find Second Life as Pedestrian Bridge in Ireland

July 28: Engineers in Ireland have demonstrated an innovative way to tackle wind energy waste by transforming decommissioned wind turbine blades into a pedestrian bridge offering a sustainable alternative to landfill disposal.

The bridge, located on the Midleton Youghal Greenway in County Cork, was installed in January 2022 by the Re-Wind Network using two retired LM13.4 blades from Nordex N29 wind turbines. The project was supported by MaREI, Ireland national research centre for energy, climate and marine research.

Wind turbine blades are among the most difficult components of turbines to recycle. Made from fiberglass or carbon fiber composites bonded with thermoset resins, they are lightweight, durable and weather resistant but cannot be easily melted down or reshaped like metals or conventional plastics. Recycling typically requires energy intensive processes such as grinding, pyrolysis or chemical treatment, making landfill disposal the most common option.

Researchers estimate the United States alone could generate around 2.2 million tonnes of cumulative wind turbine blade waste by 2050 as older wind farms reach the end of their operational lives.

Before construction, the Re Wind Network conducted engineering studies to evaluate whether retired blades could safely serve as bridge girders. Structural analyses showed the blades could withstand expected loads while meeting European safety and deflection standards, confirming their suitability for small infrastructure projects.

The completed bridge spans approximately five metres. The broad root ends of the blades rest on concrete supports, while their narrower tips are anchored into the ground. A deck built above the blades provides a safe crossing for pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles.

Researchers believe repurposing retired blades could extend beyond footbridges. Other potential applications include highway noise barriers, utility poles, bicycle shelters, emergency housing and structural building components, taking advantage of the blades’ long term durability and strength.

Experts say such reuse projects could help reduce landfill waste conserve raw materials and improve the sustainability of the rapidly growing wind energy sector by giving retired turbine blades a productive second life.
