Climate Change is Reshaping Ladakh’s Traditional Homes as Rainfall Patterns Shift

 

Leh, Aug 2: Climate change is transforming the architecture of Ladakh with increasing rainfall forcing residents to replace centuries old mud roofs with corrugated tin sheets and reinforced concrete. While these changes help protect homes from water damage, conservationists warn they could gradually erase the region’s unique architectural heritage.

For generations, Ladakhi homes were built using sun dried mud bricks, thick earthen walls and flat mud roofs supported by wooden beams. These structures were well adapted to the region’s cold, dry climate, providing natural insulation during freezing winters and cool summers.

However, residents say weather patterns have changed significantly in recent years. Rainfall, once rare and brief has become more frequent and intense, causing traditional mud roofs to leak and damaging earthen walls.

Leh resident Dechen Angmo said her family replaced their traditional roof with corrugated tin sheets after heavy rains last year severely damaged their home. Although the upgrade cost around ₹2.8 lakh, she said the family had little choice. Despite the change, they retained the mud walls because of their superior insulation against Ladakh’s extreme temperatures.

Similar stories are emerging across villages including Ganglas, Basgo, Khardung, Diskit and Hunder where many households are opting for concrete roofs or metal sheets to withstand changing weather conditions.

Residents also report warmer summers, reduced snowfall and more frequent rain. While some attribute the shift to broader climate change, others believe increased tree plantation may also be influencing local weather.

According to Sonam Lotus Director of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Leh, the region’s average annual rainfall has not increased substantially, but short duration, high intensity and highly localised downpours have become more common. These events pose new risks for buildings that were never designed to withstand prolonged moisture and heavy rainfall.

The transition is proving expensive. Construction materials such as cement, steel and roofing sheets must be transported over long mountain routes significantly increasing building costs in the remote Himalayan region.

Heritage experts are concerned that widespread adoption of cement and tin roofs could permanently alter Ladakh’s traditional landscape. Sonam Wangchok, founder of the Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation, urged that climate adaptation should strengthen traditional building techniques rather than replace them entirely. He stressed that conservation architects and experts should guide efforts to make historic structures more resilient while preserving their cultural identity.

The report highlights how climate change is not only altering weather patterns in the Himalayas but also reshaping the region architecture livelihoods and cultural heritage.
