New Delhi, Aug 2: Countries across the world are strengthening efforts to tackle climate change, improve waste management, conserve biodiversity, and prepare for increasingly frequent extreme weather events through innovative policies and scientific solutions.
A major breakthrough in plastic recycling has emerged from researchers at the University of Manchester, who have developed a “super enzyme” capable of breaking down tough polycarbonate plastics into their original building blocks. Scientists believe the technology could pave the way for a truly circular plastic economy by enabling high-quality recycling while reducing dependence on crude oil for new plastic production.
Climate scientists have also warned that tropical ecosystems are facing unprecedented risks. A recent study by researchers from Brazil’s Federal University of Minas Gerais found that projected climate change by 2050 could trigger vegetation shifts across the tropics comparable to transformations that naturally occurred over the last 3.3 million years. The study highlights the vulnerability of biodiversity rich regions such as the Amazon and the Malay Archipelago to rapid warming and prolonged drought.
Meanwhile, governments are intensifying disaster preparedness measures amid forecasts of a strong El Niño event later this year. Tamil Nadu has constituted an expert advisory committee to assess climate risks, strengthen early warning systems, and recommend drought and flood mitigation strategies. In Nepal, the National Security Council reviewed monsoon disaster preparedness while discussing measures to enhance coordination among security agencies and disaster management authorities.
Urban sustainability initiatives are also gathering pace. Delhi Development Authority has launched an ecological restoration programme across 120 hectares of the Ridge by planting nearly 1.81 lakh native trees and shrubs while removing invasive species. The project aims to improve biodiversity, enhance groundwater recharge, and reduce urban heat.
Supporting the role of green infrastructure, a study by South Korea’s National Institute of Forest Science found that urban forests can lower daytime temperatures by up to 1.8 degrees Celsius compared to densely built-up areas. Researchers noted that broadleaf and mixed forests provide the greatest cooling effect through canopy cover and evapotranspiration, making them an effective natural solution to rising urban temperatures.
In Andhra Pradesh, Madanapalle Municipality is progressing towards becoming a Zero Waste City under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0. The municipality has adopted scientific waste segregation, composting, recycling, biomining, and waste to art initiatives to minimise landfill waste and maximise resource recovery. More than 36,500 metric tonnes of legacy waste have already been remediated, reclaiming land for green development.
Efforts to combat river pollution are also underway. The Centre has directed Uttar Pradesh to complete sewage treatment and pollution control projects on drains flowing into the Yamuna by January 2028. The roadmap includes expanding sewage treatment capacity and curbing industrial pollution in key urban areas.
Marine ecosystem conservation remains another priority. Saudi Arabia is expanding mangrove restoration under the Saudi Green Initiative, recognising mangroves as critical ecosystems for carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, fisheries support, and coastal protection. Scientists emphasise that successful restoration depends on rebuilding entire ecosystems rather than simply planting trees.
Concerns over global waste continue to grow as Chile’s Atacama Desert has become home to an estimated 60,000 tonnes of discarded clothing, exposing the environmental costs of fast fashion and international textile waste. The growing landfill has prompted renewed calls for stronger recycling systems and producer responsibility across the fashion industry.
A comparative analysis of Japan’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system has meanwhile highlighted both successes and shortcomings. While Japan has achieved high levels of waste segregation and reduced landfill use, experts argue that its continued reliance on plastic incineration and weight-based recycling fees limits progress towards a genuinely circular economy.
According to Munich Re’s latest assessment, natural disasters caused approximately US$112 billion in global losses during the first half of 2026, with only US$44 billion covered by insurance. The report warns that the anticipated arrival of a Super El Niño could significantly increase the risks of droughts, floods, wildfires, tropical cyclones, and heatwaves during the remainder of the year.
Together, these developments underscore a growing global recognition that climate resilience, sustainable resource management, ecosystem restoration, and scientific innovation must work hand in hand to address the escalating environmental challenges facing communities worldwide.
