After Nearly 200 Years Bison Return to Northern Mexico and Begin Restoring a Lost Ecosystem

Nearly two centuries after American bison disappeared from a region of northern Mexico, their return is beginning to reshape the landscape.

In 2025, 47 American bison were reintroduced into the El Santuario Reserve in Cuatrociénegas, Coahuila, marking a major step in efforts to restore an animal that once played an important ecological role across the region.

The bison were released in two stages. Three animals arrived in August, followed by another 44 in November, including 38 females and six males. The animals came from a conservation population associated with Rancho El Uno in Chihuahua’s Janos Biosphere Reserve.

Conservationists describe bison as “ecosystem engineers” because their feeding and movement can influence vegetation, soil, nutrient cycles and other wildlife.

Restoring a Missing Ecological Role

Bison disappeared from the Cuatrociénegas region roughly 160 to 200 years ago, largely as a result of hunting and human activity. Their absence removed one of the area’s major large herbivores and altered natural ecological processes.

Their return is therefore intended to restore more than a species. It aims to reintroduce the functions that bison historically performed across the landscape.

As the animals graze, they consume grasses and other vegetation, including dry plant material that can become fuel for wildfires. Their feeding activity could therefore reduce the amount of combustible vegetation and potentially limit the intensity or spread of fires.

Their hooves also disturb the soil as they move. This can create small openings that allow water to penetrate the ground more effectively, potentially improving soil conditions and supporting vegetation growth.

Bison also contribute to natural seed dispersal. Seeds can attach to their fur and be transported across the landscape before falling elsewhere. Their dung returns organic matter to the soil and supports organisms such as dung beetles, contributing to nutrient cycling and soil aeration.

Early Signs of a Wider Ecological Impact

The effects of the reintroduction may already be extending beyond the bison themselves.

Camera traps in the reserve have recorded wildlife including pumas, lynxes and collared peccaries. Birds have also been observed using bison fur as nesting material.

These observations do not by themselves prove that the bison caused the return of these species. Ecosystem recovery depends on numerous factors, including water availability, vegetation climate and human activity. Long term monitoring will be necessary to determine how lasting the changes become.

Nevertheless, the early observations are encouraging for conservationists.

A Unique Conservation Landscape

Cuatrociénegas is one of Mexico’s most ecologically distinctive landscapes. The protected area covers approximately 84,000 hectares and contains gypsum dunes, springs and unusual aquatic habitats.

The region is known for its exceptionally high level of endemism, with numerous species found nowhere else. Protecting and restoring its ecological processes is therefore considered important not only for individual species but for the wider desert ecosystem.

The bison project forms part of broader efforts in Mexico to restore populations of the species in areas where they historically occurred.

From Species Protection to Ecosystem Restoration

The return of the bison illustrates a broader shift in conservation thinking: protecting wildlife can also mean restoring the ecological functions that animals perform.

In Cuatrociénegas, grazing, soil disturbance, seed dispersal and nutrient cycling are once again being carried out by a species that had been absent for generations.

The 47 animals represent only the beginning of the restoration effort and their long term impact will depend on continued monitoring and effective management. But their return offers a powerful example of how bringing back a lost species can help reconnect ecological processes that were disrupted by its disappearance.

For a landscape that went nearly 200 years without its native bison the animals return could become an important step toward rebuilding a healthier and more resilient ecosystem.
