Monsoon Advances Across North India, But Why Is Rain Still Missing?

The southwest monsoon is steadily advancing into more parts of northern India, but many people are wondering why large areas are still waiting for significant rainfall. According to weather experts, the answer lies in the difference between the geographical advance of the monsoon and the actual occurrence of widespread rain.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to move further into parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand over the next three to four days. However, despite this progress, much of North India continues to experience hot and dry weather with little rainfall.

Monsoon Winds Have Advanced, But Rainfall Depends on Weather Systems

Meteorologists explain that the advance of the monsoon is marked by the movement of moisture-laden winds into new regions. This does not automatically mean that these areas will receive heavy or widespread rainfall immediately.

For widespread rain to occur, stronger weather systems such as low pressure areas or depressions need to develop, particularly over the Bay of Bengal. These systems help pull moisture inland and trigger sustained rainfall across large regions. In their absence, the monsoon can continue advancing northward while rain remains scattered or minimal.

Developing Tropical System May Bring Widespread Showers Soon

Weather models indicate that a large tropical weather system is developing over the eastern Indian Ocean, north of the equator. If the system strengthens and moves in a favourable direction, it could generate low pressure conditions that enhance the monsoon flow and bring more widespread rainfall across North India.

Until then, many northern states are likely to continue experiencing above normal temperatures and isolated showers despite the official advance of the monsoon. Weather experts say the situation is expected to improve once stronger monsoon systems develop, allowing rainfall to become more widespread over the coming days.
