New Delhi, August 14: The southwest monsoon is expected to remain active across several parts of India on Wednesday, August 12, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across a number of states.
East Rajasthan is likely to witness the most intense rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy showers also possible. Heavy to very heavy rain has been forecast at isolated places in Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, West Uttar Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Odisha.
East Rajasthan has already experienced intense rainfall. Bakani in Jhalawar recorded 27 cm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on August 11, while Pirawa received 26 cm. Several other locations in Jhalawar and Kota also recorded more than 10 cm of rainfall.
West Madhya Pradesh is also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain. The IMD has additionally forecast isolated heavy rainfall over Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, West Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha and parts of the northeast.
Delhi NCR could see another wet day, with heavy to very heavy rainfall possible at isolated locations across Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi. Babain in Haryana recorded 8 cm of rain and Ganaur 7 cm during the previous 24-hour period.
The ongoing rainfall is being driven by a low pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas. The monsoon trough currently extends through parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal before reaching the Bay of Bengal.
Another low pressure area is also likely to develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal around August 12 which could sustain rainfall over parts of eastern and central India in the coming days.
Southern parts of the country are also expected to remain wet with fairly widespread rainfall likely over coastal Karnataka and Kerala. Scattered rain and thunderstorms are possible over parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
The IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall across several regions during the coming week, including the western Himalayas, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Konkan-Goa.
