Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Pradesh government has approved a ₹9 crore modern Garbage Transfer System (GTS) for Gajuwaka in Visakhapatnam, aiming to provide a long term solution to waste disposal issues and improve urban sanitation through scientific waste management practices.
The project, approved by Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister Dr. P. Narayana, is intended to address the long standing problems associated with the dumping yard affecting residents, particularly in Ward No. 76. Officials have been directed to design the facility using modern waste management technologies that support sustainable urban development.
According to the government, the proposed Garbage Transfer System will introduce scientific waste handling reduce environmental pollution and strengthen the city’s solid waste management infrastructure while improving overall sanitation standards.
The approval was announced during a high level review meeting on development works in the Gajuwaka Assembly constituency. The meeting was attended by Gajuwaka MLA and TDP State president Palla Srinivasa Rao, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner Ketan Garg, VMRDA Commissioner Tej Bharat, and other officials.
Alongside the waste management project, the government approved a series of urban infrastructure initiatives. Eight major parks in Gajuwaka will be modernised with facilities including open air gyms, walking tracks, improved lighting, upgraded drainage systems, landscaped green spaces and children’s play areas. Special priority has been given to the development of parks at Harijan Jaggayyapalem and Sheelanagar.
Sports facilities in the constituency are also set for improvement, with the Kurmannapalem Indoor Stadium and several playgrounds scheduled for modernisation to encourage sports participation among youth.
To address growing traffic congestion, officials have been instructed to expedite road widening projects along key transport corridors, including the Kakatiya ITI Junction–Shaivani School Road, Jaggu Junction–Y Junction corridor, Old Gajuwaka Junction Srinagar APIIC Junction Road, Gangavaram Main Road, Vadlapudi Road, Kurmannapalem Duvvada Railway Station Road, and the Vantillu Junction Jag Junction corridor.
The government has also approved the construction of a ₹4-crore Smart Street Vending Market beneath the Kurmannapalem Duvvada flyover. The proposed facility will include 70 commercial units, pedestrian friendly walkways and essential civic amenities to provide organised vending spaces and support sustainable livelihoods for street vendors.
As part of urban beautification efforts, Vantillu Junction, Vadlapudi Junction and Mathrusri Junction will be redesigned into modern, traffic-friendly public spaces.
Officials said the combined initiatives are aimed at improving waste management, strengthening civic infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for residents in one of Visakhapatnam’s fastest-growing urban areas.
