Heavy Rains Set to Soak Haryana as Monsoon Strengthens

Gurgaon: After intermittent showers over the past few days, Haryana is bracing for a spell of intense rainfall next week as the monsoon gathers momentum. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert from July 20 to 22 across northern, eastern and southern parts of the state, including Gurgaon.

While Saturday may bring light rain in isolated areas, weather officials warn that the intensity and spread of rain will increase significantly by Monday and Tuesday potentially triggering localized flooding and waterlogging, especially in low-lying zones.

According to IMD experts this surge is being driven by a depression over northwest Rajasthan and an active monsoon trough in the region. In addition a fresh western disturbance at mid-tropospheric levels is expected to fuel further rainfall intensity.

So far, July has already been wetter than usual in Gurgaon. The city has recorded 182.2mm of rain which is 69% above the normal of 108.1mm for this time of year. This is a stark contrast to last July, when rainfall was 47% below normal.

For comparison, July 2023 ended with a 24% surplus (217.2mm), while July 2022 logged 208.4mm, 19% above average. With another wet week on the horizon, this year’s monsoon total is expected to rise further.

Meanwhile, temperatures remain warm. Saturday recorded a minimum of 26.2°C, slightly up from Friday’s 25.7°C, while maximum temperatures touched 32.5°C, up from 31.4°C a day earlier.

Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take precautions to avoid travel disruptions and potential hazards in waterlogged areas.
