From barren coral island to ecological recovery: How one Australian pilot helped revive Lady Elliot Island

August 11, 2026: More than five decades ago, Australian pilot Don Adams took on an ambitious restoration project on a severely degraded coral island at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. His efforts on Lady Elliot Island helped lay the foundation for a long-term ecological recovery that continues today.

When Adams first arrived on the island in 1969, Lady Elliot looked very different from the tropical destination it is now. Decades of guano mining had stripped much of its nutrient-rich soil and vegetation, while introduced goats prevented new plants from becoming established.

Adams secured a tourism lease from the Australian government and began restoring the damaged island. Among the challenges he faced was a severe lack of freshwater. He transported drums of water by aircraft and brought thousands of seedlings from mainland Queensland and nearby islands to begin revegetation.

A coral island devastated by mining

Commercial guano mining began on Lady Elliot Island in 1863. Historical accounts indicate that miners removed around three feet of nutrient-rich guano soil while clearing much of the island’s vegetation.

The removal of soil severely affected the island’s ability to support plants and seabird colonies. Introduced goats added to the damage by consuming vegetation and making it harder for new plants to establish.

Mining ended in 1874, but the ecological damage remained for decades, leaving much of the coral cay exposed and barren.

Restoration begins in 1969

When Adams flew over Lady Elliot Island in the late 1960s, he saw an opportunity to combine tourism with conservation.

His 1969 tourism lease required the development of a grass airstrip and basic accommodation. However, Adams also began a major revegetation programme.

He and his family planted thousands of trees and introduced species including casuarinas, pandanus, pisonia and native mulberry. Freshwater was flown to the island to support the early plantings, which had to survive on nutrient-poor coral rubble.

The restoration was important because the island had lost many of the natural processes that normally help coral cays develop. Seabirds contribute nutrients through their guano, while early vegetation helps stabilise loose sediments and creates conditions for additional plants to establish.

As vegetation gradually returned, these natural processes began to rebuild parts of the island’s ecosystem.

The return of vegetation helped create nesting and breeding habitats for seabirds while improving nutrient cycling.

Lady Elliot Island now supports breeding populations of noddies, terns, shearwaters and other seabirds. Its surrounding reef also provides habitat for species including manta rays, reef sharks, turtles and hundreds of species of fish.

The island is located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park’s highly protected Green Zone, where fishing and other extractive activities are prohibited.

Why vegetation matters for reef islands

Scientists say restoring coral islands involves much more than simply planting trees.

Vegetation can help stabilise sediments, reduce erosion and provide habitat for seabirds and other wildlife. It can also strengthen the ecological connection between coral reefs and their neighbouring islands by supporting nutrient exchange.

These lessons are now informing restoration efforts elsewhere across the Great Barrier Reef, including projects focused on removing invasive species, restoring native coastal vegetation and rebuilding damaged habitats.

Adams eventually sold his commercial recreation lease in 1977. The island later underwent changes in management, with the Australian Government establishing a new framework for a low impact eco resort in 1984.

The current management group, led by Peter Gash, has continued restoration efforts. Since 2005, operators have reportedly planted more than 10,000 additional native trees while investing in sustainable tourism infrastructure.

Lady Elliot Island’s transformation demonstrates how severely degraded ecosystems can gradually recover when restoration is sustained over decades.

From a landscape stripped of vegetation and soil by mining, the coral cay has developed into an important habitat for seabirds and marine life, showing how long-term conservation can help rebuild ecological processes on fragile reef islands.
