The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert for several states across the country, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds over the next few days. While parts of India continue to reel under intense summer heat, changing weather patterns are now bringing rain activity to many regions.
According to IMD gusty winds reaching up to 70 kmph may hit some states, while heavy rain is expected in parts of Northeast India, South India and northern states including Delhi, Punjab and Haryana.
Heavy Rain And Thunderstorm Alert In Multiple States
Maharashtra is expected to receive isolated light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next two days. Strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are also likely in several districts.
In Chhattisgarh, IMD has warned of a thundersquall with wind speeds reaching 50 to 60 kmph and gusting up to 70 kmph in some areas.
The weather department has also predicted heavy rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till May 15. Several northeastern states may witness continuous rain activity along with lightning and strong winds.
A low pressure area is likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal around May 11, which could further intensify rainfall activity in eastern and northeastern regions.
Delhi NCR, UP, Haryana And Punjab To Witness Weather Change
Delhi NCR is likely to receive very light to light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on May 11 and 12. IMD has issued a yellow alert for the national capital region during this period.
Strong surface winds are expected to blow at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph, with gusts touching 50 kmph. After this spell, Delhi may continue to witness partly cloudy skies till May 16.
Several districts in Uttar Pradesh including Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Kanpur and Meerut are also likely to experience thunderstorms and rainfall between May 10 and 14. Hailstorms may occur in isolated regions.
Rain activity is also expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between May 11 and 14.
South India Likely To Receive Continuous Rainfall
Southern states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next seven days.
IMD has warned that coastal regions may also witness strong winds and high sea waves during this period. Authorities have advised fishermen and residents in coastal belts to remain cautious.
Despite the rainfall activity in many parts of the country, heatwave conditions are still likely to continue in Rajasthan, Gujarat and parts of Madhya Pradesh over the coming days.
Weather experts say the current shift in weather patterns could indicate favourable conditions for the gradual onset of the southwest monsoon over southern India in the coming weeks.
