The southwest monsoon continues its steady advance across India, reaching more parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Karnataka including Bengaluru, and the entire northeastern region, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed in its latest update.
As monsoon winds sweep in, several regions are bracing for intense rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. Here’s a region-wise summary of what to expect in the coming days:
West and Central India:
Extremely heavy rain is forecast over the Konkan coast, including Mumbai, and ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on May 26 and 27. Gujarat will see thundersqualls with wind speeds of 50–60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph. Marathwada and parts of Gujarat are likely to receive isolated heavy rain between May 26 and 29. Isolated heavy showers are also likely in Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Odisha, and West Bengal till May 31.
South India:
Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Kerala, coastal and south interior Karnataka, and the ghat areas of Tamil Nadu from May 26 through June 1. Tamil Nadu may also face thunderstorms with gusty winds (40–50 kmph). Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Telangana will experience thunderstorms and scattered heavy rain over the next five days, with thundersqualls expected from May 27–29.
Northeast India:
Rain will persist throughout the week with widespread light to moderate rainfall. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are set for very heavy rainfall from May 28–June 1, while Assam and Meghalaya will see the heaviest rain from May 29–June 1.
East India:
Thunderstorms and isolated heavy showers will affect Bihar, Odisha, and West Bengal. Odisha is expected to see very heavy rain on May 28 and 29.
North and Northwest India:
From May 27 to June 1, thunderstorms with gusty winds are expected across Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Himachal Pradesh is forecast to receive hailstorms on May 27 and 28, and heavy rain is likely over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh toward the end of the month.
Heatwave Alert:
Amid the rain activity, isolated pockets in West Rajasthan will continue to endure heatwave conditions from May 26 to 28.
As monsoon dynamics grow more intense, the IMD advises residents and authorities to stay alert, particularly in flood-prone and hill regions vulnerable to landslides. Travelers and farmers are urged to monitor updates and advisories closely.
