Mexico City Turns Highway Pillars Into Vertical Gardens to Fight Pollution and Heat

Mexico City has transformed sections of its busy highway infrastructure into lush vertical gardens, covering concrete pillars with thousands of plants in an effort to tackle pollution, rising temperatures and the shortage of green spaces.

The project, known as Via Verde, was launched in 2016 by architect Fernando Ortiz Monasterio. It focuses on turning the massive concrete columns supporting the city’s Anillo Periférico ring road into living green structures.

Instead of requiring new land for parks and forests, the initiative uses existing highway infrastructure as a framework for vegetation. What were once bare concrete pillars standing above some of Mexico City’s busiest roads have gradually been transformed into vertical gardens.

The project gained public support after its proposal was shared online, highlighting strong interest in bringing more greenery into the densely populated capital. As the plants spread across the highway columns, sections of the road network began to change from a grey concrete landscape into a continuous stretch of vertical vegetation.

The gardens were specially designed to survive the difficult conditions surrounding major roads. The plants must withstand high temperatures, vehicle pollution, limited growing space and constant exposure to traffic.

The system includes irrigation and monitoring technology to maintain the vegetation. Unlike traditional parks, the vertical gardens require little additional ground space, making them suitable for densely built urban areas where land is limited.

Via Verde has also adopted a private sector financing model, including advertising partnerships, to help cover installation and maintenance costs. This approach has allowed the project to expand without depending entirely on public funding.

Supporters say the vegetation can provide several environmental benefits. Plants can offer shade, capture some airborne pollutants, absorb carbon dioxide and reduce the amount of exposed concrete that contributes to the urban heat-island effect.

However, experts and critics have also pointed out that vertical gardens cannot replace traditional parks and urban forests. Trees planted at street level can provide direct shade, cooling and public spaces that residents can access and enjoy.

Mexico City continues to face a shortage of accessible green spaces, and covering highway pillars with plants alone cannot solve the problem. Nevertheless, the Via Verde project has demonstrated how existing infrastructure can be redesigned to serve additional environmental purposes.

The initiative has become an example of creative urban planning, showing that structures traditionally associated with traffic, pollution and concrete can be transformed into greener spaces.

For Mexico City, the project represents a different approach to urban sustainability: rather than removing existing infrastructure, it attempts to make it work alongside nature by turning unused vertical surfaces into living landscapes.
