AI Could Strengthen Flood Prediction and Water Management Experts Say

 

Madanapalle, September 9: Artificial intelligence (AI), when combined with real time sensor data, satellite imagery and weather forecasts, could significantly improve flood prediction, water management and climate monitoring, experts said at a science workshop in Andhra Pradesh.

The observations were made during a two day Science Academies Workshop on “AI and Space Technologies for Climate and Resource Monitoring” held at Madanapalle Institute of Technology and Science (MITS) Deemed to be University in Annamayya district.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru professor D. Nagesh Kumar said integrating data from sensors, satellites and weather forecasting systems with AI could support smarter water resource management.

Such systems could help authorities anticipate floods and water scarcity while enabling quicker decisions on reservoir operations, irrigation planning and drinking water supply.

The workshop was organised by the CSE (AI and ML) department of MITS in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy and the National Academy of Sciences.

Scientists from India’s space and atmospheric research institutions also discussed emerging applications of technology in environmental monitoring. ISRO scientist Kandula V. Subrahmanyam and National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL) scientist Jyothi Narayan Bhate highlighted the role of AI in earth observation and climate monitoring.

Meanwhile R4 Aerospace’s Subhash P. Kuppuswamy spoke about the expanding opportunities in India’s space sector.

Faculty members and students participated in the workshop, which focused on how advances in AI and space technologies could strengthen India’s ability to monitor climate and manage critical natural resources.

The discussions come as increasingly sophisticated combinations of satellite observations, ground based sensors and weather data are creating new possibilities for faster and more informed decisions during floods, droughts and other climate related events.
