The winter cold is set to tighten its grip over Delhi-NCR, with temperatures expected to drop further in the coming days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Chilly northern winds are making a comeback, keeping daytime and nighttime temperatures low. Meanwhile, several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan, are on alert for rain and dense fog, which could further impact visibility and travel conditions.
On Wednesday, northern states enjoyed bright sunshine, but the persistent chill in the air ensured that winter conditions remained. However, the weather is expected to fluctuate, with cloudy spells and occasional temperature rises in the coming days.
Thick Fog Set to Cover Delhi & Uttar Pradesh
IMD forecasts that Delhi and Uttar Pradesh will experience a further dip in temperatures on Thursday. If early morning winds remain calm, dense fog is likely to form, significantly reducing visibility. The return of icy northern winds could bring colder days ahead, making early morning and late-night hours especially chilly.
Rain and Fog Alert for Multiple States
Several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar, have been put on alert as intermittent rain and dense fog are expected to disrupt normal life. Heavy rainfall has also been predicted for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, while Odisha, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim may witness thick fog, particularly during the night and early morning hours.
Light Rain and Snowfall in Northern States
A western disturbance currently affecting western Afghanistan is expected to reach northwest India by February 8, bringing light rain and snowfall to the western Himalayan region over the weekend. Other parts of India, however, are expected to remain dry.
Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR is likely to experience light fog in the morning, with clearer skies later in the day.
Delhi Temperatures to Drop Further
IMD predicts light fog in Delhi-NCR on Thursday morning, followed by mostly clear skies. The city’s maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 25°C and 9°C, respectively.
On Wednesday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 23.7°C, slightly above normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 11.0°C, also above the usual levels. Humidity levels ranged between 93% and 47%, fluctuating throughout the day.
Delhi’s Air Quality Remains ‘Poor’
Adding to the concerns, Delhi continues to battle poor air quality. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) revealed that 17 locations in the capital recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) above 300 on Wednesday, placing them in the ‘Very Poor’ category. However, the city’s overall AQI remained just under 300, keeping it in the ‘Poor’ category.
Experts predict that Delhi’s air quality will remain in the same range for the next two days, as weather conditions and pollution levels continue to influence atmospheric quality. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, especially during peak pollution hours, to avoid health risks.
As winter lingers, fluctuating temperatures, fog, and pollution are set to define the season’s closing weeks, with authorities urging people to stay prepared for changing weather conditions.
