Gujarat Battles Torrential Rains: 18 Dead, Widespread Flooding Sparks Statewide Emergency

Ahmedabad: Gujarat is reeling under the impact of relentless monsoon rains that have claimed 18 lives and triggered severe flooding across major districts. The state government has swung into action, deploying National and State Disaster Response Force (NDRF and SDRF) teams to manage the unfolding crisis.

According to State Emergency Commissioner Alok Pandey, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel chaired an emergency meeting on Tuesday, connecting with District Magistrates from 25 districts to coordinate rescue and relief operations. Authorities are racing to limit damage and protect lives as the situation grows critical.

The worst-hit regions include Botad, Amreli, Surendranagar, and Bhavnagar, where continuous downpours have inundated towns and farmlands. In Botad district’s Gadhada area, the Khambhada Dam gates were opened to manage the swelling water levels, but this move has further worsened local flooding. Streets remain waterlogged, forcing the evacuation of residents and livestock to safer ground as urban flooding and road blockages disrupt daily life.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the state, warning of more intense rainfall over the next 24 hours. Disaster response teams are on high alert, and residents have been urged to remain indoors and follow safety advisories.

As Gujarat faces the fury of nature, rescue efforts continue round the clock in a desperate attempt to prevent further loss of life and property.
