Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Governor S Abdul Nazeer has called upon citizens to participate in Earth Hour by switching off non-essential lights for one hour on March 22, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. The initiative, spearheaded by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), is a global movement promoting conservation and sustainability since its inception in 2007 in Sydney, Australia.
Governor Nazeer emphasized that this symbolic action serves as a reminder of the urgent need for environmental consciousness and sustainable practices. “By turning off lights for just one hour, individuals across the world demonstrate their commitment to protecting nature and combating climate change,” he stated.
Earth Hour has evolved into one of the largest global grassroots movements, engaging millions of participants in over 190 countries. It not only encourages individuals to take responsibility for energy conservation but also influences policymakers to prioritize sustainable development and climate action.
India has been an active participant in this global event, with landmarks such as India Gate, Akshardham Temple, and Howrah Bridge joining the initiative in 2024. Delhi alone recorded an electricity savings of 206 MW during the previous Earth Hour, showcasing the tangible impact of collective action. On the global stage, iconic structures like the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building have also gone dark in solidarity with the movement.
As Earth Hour 2025 approaches, the Andhra Pradesh government urges citizens, businesses, and institutions to embrace the initiative and contribute to the global effort toward a greener and more sustainable future.
